The sculptural expressiveness of Noguchi’s work is evident in the Freeform Sofa, a design unlike any other of its time. Combined with the Ottoman, it forms a sculptural ensemble reminiscent of large boulders. Its stylized, organic forms are elegant and fluid. Noguchi enhances the lightness of the pieces with fine, comfortable padding, for which he chose fabrics in natural colors. The Freeform Sofa and Ottoman were produced around 1950 in a limited series. The few original pieces that remain from that series now fetch extremely high prices at auction. In 2002, the Vitra Design Museum began producing the set as an authentic reissue. The Freeform Sofa is suitable not only for living rooms but also for lobbies, hotels, and shops.

When creating the design for his Coffee Table, Isamu Noguchi incorporated the biomorphic aesthetic of his sculptures into a piece of furniture with organic forms. Perhaps this is why Noguchi considers this table his finest furniture design. Two pieces of black ash, maple, or walnut, placed at a right angle, provide stable support for the thick and sturdy glass top.

Beginning in 1951, the Japanese-American artist and designer Isamu Noguchi created the Akari Light Sculptures, over 100 models in total, all handmade from rice paper, serving as table, floor, or ceiling lamps. He chose the word “akari” to name these lamps, a Japanese expression meaning clarity and light, which also encompasses the concept of lightness. “The light of Akari is like sunlight filtered through shoji paper. Thus, the harshness of electricity is transformed back into the light of our origin—the sun—thanks to the magic of the paper, so that its warmth continues to fill our rooms at night.” (Isamu Noguchi)
