AKARI
Isamu NoguchiEach Akari Light Sculpture is meticulously crafted by hand at the Ozeki Workshop, a traditional family business based in Gifu, Japan. The video offers a brief description of the complex manufacturing process of these lamps designed by Isamu Noguchi.
Starting in 1951, the Japanese-American artist and designer Isamu Noguchi created the Akari Light Sculptures, more than 100 models in total made by hand in rice paper, as a table, floor, or ceiling lamps. To designate these lamps, choose the word "akari", a Japanese expression that means clarity and light and that also includes the concept of lightness. “Akari's light is like sunlight filtered through shoji paper. Thus, the harshness of electricity is transformed back into the light of our origin – the sun – thanks to the magic of paper, so that its warmth continues to fill our rooms at night.” (Isamu Noguchi).
