Artemide: Italian design lighting since 1960
Artemide was founded in Milan in 1960 by Ernesto Gismondi and Sergio Mazza, whose first lamp, Alfa, dated from 1959. The company is based in Pregnana Milanese, where it opened its first factory in 1972, and it manufactures in Italy and Hungary. In 1991 it acquired VeArt, a historic Venetian glassworks, and began producing hand-blown glass collections through its own glass workshop. Its 1996 manifesto, The Human Light, placed light at the service of the person and their needs. Carlotta de Bevilacqua is president and chief executive.
Artemide lighting in Spain at Oboe
Oboe carries ten Artemide models, among them icons by Richard Sapper, Ettore Sottsass and Michele De Lucchi. Tizio, designed by Sapper in 1972, was the first lamp with a halogen light source, balanced by counterweights. Tolomeo, by De Lucchi and Giancarlo Fassina and launched in 1987, has an aluminium structure. Sottsass created Callimaco in 1982, a Radical Design piece.
