Edra was founded in 1987 in Perignano, in the province of Pisa, by the siblings Valerio and Monica Mazzei. The name is a contraction of Esedra, the open, seated space of the Greek and Roman atrium. The brand presents authors such as Francesco Binfaré, Jacopo Foggini, Masanori Umeda and Fernando and Humberto Campana.
Two proprietary materials define much of the range. Gellyfoam forms the soft core of many pieces, while the patented Intelligent Cushion is a structural cushion that adapts with a single gesture. All Edra fabrics are made exclusively by the brand.
