String Furniture

String Furniture is the Swedish company behind the String System, a modular shelving design created by the architects Nisse and Kajsa Strinning in 1949. Oboe Muebles works with the brand from its showrooms in Málaga and Marbella and carries its products in the catalogue. On this page you will find the String pieces in our catalogue, the story behind the system and its materials, and how to request a quote or book an appointment with an adviser.

The String System, a Swedish design since 1949

The String System was designed by Nisse Strinning (1917-2006) and Kajsa Strinning (1922-2017) in 1949, winning first prize in a competition run by the publisher Bonniers Folkbibliotek. Its wire side panels remain the signature of the design, and plexiglass panels followed in 1954 as the first major addition. The measurements have not changed since 1949, so older elements still fit with new ones. The shelving reached the new United Nations headquarters in New York in 1952 and won a gold medal at the 1954 Milan Triennale. The current company, String Furniture AB, was founded in 2004 by Peter Erlandsson and Pär Josefsson in Limhamn, Sweden.

Materials and making

String is designed and manufactured in Sweden, with 98% of product volume sourced from Swedish suppliers. Around 97% of the range is made from wood and steel, steel being the main material, and all steel wire is produced from recycled steel. Lacquers on wood are entirely water-based, and powder-coated surfaces use a technique free of solvents and VOCs. Shelving and cabinets are offered in oak, ash and walnut. The design entered the Nationalmuseum's permanent collection in 1979 and received the Long Life Design award in Japan in 2020.

String Furniture at Oboe

Oboe carries thirteen String Furniture products in its catalogue. They appear across categories including Shelving, Office and Living room furniture, as well as bedroom, kitchen and hallway pieces. Catalogue options include the String shelving system in kitchen, desk, hall and outdoor configurations, along with String Pocket. String Pocket was Nisse Strinning's final design, launched in 2005. String Outdoor is the galvanised version of the system for exterior use, and its metal develops its own patina over time. The height-adjustable desks belong to the Works series by Anna von Schewen and Björn Dahlström.

Can I order String pieces to combine with older ones?
