Vitra is a Swiss family company, founded in 1950, that produces re-editions of design classics by designers such as Charles and Ray Eames and Jean Prouvé. At Oboe Muebles you will find 81 Vitra pieces in our catalogue, from chairs and sofas to office furniture, clocks and objects. This page explains the brand, what we hold from it, and how to order Vitra furniture in Spain through our showrooms in Málaga and Marbella.
A Swiss family company since 1950
Willi and Erika Fehlbaum founded Vitra in 1950. The company remains family-owned: Nora Fehlbaum chairs the board and Rolf Fehlbaum also sits on it. Its head office is in Birsfelden, near Basel, and it manufactures in three of its own plants: Weil am Rhein in Germany, Sugito in Japan and Szombathely in Hungary. In 1957 Vitra began licensed production of Charles and Ray Eames designs, following its agreement with Herman Miller.
Design classics and recycled materials
Vitra's catalogue brings together pieces by leading twentieth-century designers. The Eames Plastic Chair (Charles and Ray Eames, 1950) was the first chair with seat and back formed from a single plastic shell; the Standard Chair (Jean Prouvé, 1934) and the Cité armchair (Jean Prouvé, 1930) sit alongside Frank Gehry's Wiggle Side Chair in corrugated cardboard (1972). The company uses Plastic RE, a recycled plastic drawn from household and industrial waste, in more than 30 products, and developed V-Foam with BASF for its ACX office chair.
